DESCRIPTION:9 September 2026  |  ONLINE  |  10:00–12:00 BST\nWorkshop 1 \nCan swappable energy systems allow zero-emission vessels to operate before permanent port infrastructure is in place?\nAcross much of the Mediterranean\, the renewable-energy and hydrogen infrastructure needed for zero-emission shipping does not yet exist at the quayside. \nBut that does not necessarily mean vessels need to wait. \nThe first ShipZERO31 online workshop will examine how containerised battery and hydrogen energy systems could provide a practical bridge to zero-emission operation\, allowing energy to be produced or stored away from the port\, transported using existing logistics networks and transferred directly onto vessels. \nFor some applications\, the port infrastructure required to get started could be little more than the ability to handle a standard container. \nRather than asking what might be possible in the future\, this workshop will look at what technologies already exist\, what is beginning to be deployed\, and what is still preventing wider adoption. \n\nWhat will the workshop explore?\n\nSwappable battery\, gaseous-hydrogen and liquid-hydrogen systems\nWhich vessel types and operating profiles are best suited to them\nFilling\, charging\, transport\, port handling\, connection and onboard integration\nHow existing infrastructure can be used rather than waiting for dedicated bunkering or charging facilities\nCertification\, safety and regulatory requirements\nInteroperability\, connectors and the need for common standards\nHow systems from different technology providers could work within a common framework\nThe practical and commercial barriers preventing wider deployment\n\n\nFrom presentations to problem-solving\nThis is a two-hour working session. \nThe first hour will bring together expert perspectives from across the swappable-energy ecosystem. \nThe second will move into an expert roundtable focused on one central question: \nWhat are the common challenges\, what is already working\, and which questions must we answer to make swappable zero-emission energy systems deployable at scale?\nThe objective is not to solve every challenge in two hours. The challenge now is bringing the pieces together. \nThe online workshop series will examine those pieces individually before bringing the findings together through ShipZERO31 and the Mediterranean Zero Emission Ecosystem.
