SUMMARY:SMM (Shipbuilding\, Machinery & Marine Technology)
DESCRIPTION:SMM is one of the world’s leading maritime trade fairs\, bringing together shipyards\, equipment manufacturers\, technology developers\, classification societies\, shipowners and service providers from across the global maritime industry. The event combines a large-scale international exhibition with high-level conferences and technical forums addressing ship design\, propulsion systems\, digitalisation\, energy transition and maritime infrastructure. \nThe 2026 edition will take place from 1 to 4 September 2026 at Hamburg Messe und Congress\, positioning Hamburg once again as a central meeting point for the international maritime sector. \nSMM is organised by Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH\, the official exhibition authority of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. \nZESTAs Secretary General Madadh MacLaine will be attending\, engaging with shipowners\, system integrators operating across the maritime value chain\, technology providers and policymakers to advance practical deployment pathways for Absolute Zero emissions shipping.

SUMMARY:ShipZERO31 Web-workshop-1: Swappable Energy Storage Systems Web-workshop
DESCRIPTION:9 September 2026  |  ONLINE  |  10:00–12:00 BST\nWorkshop 1 \nCan swappable energy systems allow zero-emission vessels to operate before permanent port infrastructure is in place?\nAcross much of the Mediterranean\, the renewable-energy and hydrogen infrastructure needed for zero-emission shipping does not yet exist at the quayside. \nBut that does not necessarily mean vessels need to wait. \nThe first ShipZERO31 online workshop will examine how containerised battery and hydrogen energy systems could provide a practical bridge to zero-emission operation\, allowing energy to be produced or stored away from the port\, transported using existing logistics networks and transferred directly onto vessels. \nFor some applications\, the port infrastructure required to get started could be little more than the ability to handle a standard container. \nRather than asking what might be possible in the future\, this workshop will look at what technologies already exist\, what is beginning to be deployed\, and what is still preventing wider adoption. \n\nWhat will the workshop explore?\n\nSwappable battery\, gaseous-hydrogen and liquid-hydrogen systems\nWhich vessel types and operating profiles are best suited to them\nFilling\, charging\, transport\, port handling\, connection and onboard integration\nHow existing infrastructure can be used rather than waiting for dedicated bunkering or charging facilities\nCertification\, safety and regulatory requirements\nInteroperability\, connectors and the need for common standards\nHow systems from different technology providers could work within a common framework\nThe practical and commercial barriers preventing wider deployment\n\n\nFrom presentations to problem-solving\nThis is a two-hour working session. \nThe first hour will bring together expert perspectives from across the swappable-energy ecosystem. \nThe second will move into an expert roundtable focused on one central question: \nWhat are the common challenges\, what is already working\, and which questions must we answer to make swappable zero-emission energy systems deployable at scale?\nThe objective is not to solve every challenge in two hours. It is to establish a shared understanding of the technology\, identify the barriers that can be addressed collectively\, and provide a strong foundation for the next stage of ShipZERO31. \nMeet the experts \nSpecialists from across the swappable-energy ecosystem\nShipZERO31 Workshop 1 brings together specialists working across marine batteries\, hydrogen storage\, liquid hydrogen\, ports\, vessel integration and energy-system deployment. \n\n\n\n\n\nChris Kruger \nFounder & President\, AYK Energy \nMarine battery technology and zero-emission vessel applications \n\n\n\n\n\nDr Jehan Kanga \nFounder & CEO\, Rux Energy \nAdvanced hydrogen storage and containerised hydrogen systems \n\n\n\n\n\nWouter Vuijk \nBusiness Manager\, Port of Rotterdam \nPort infrastructure\, inland shipping and swappable energy systems \n\n\n\n\n\nTherese Zahl Remøy \nBusiness Development Manager\, Hexagon Purus \nMaritime hydrogen storage and compressed hydrogen systems \n\n\n\n\n\nThomas Korn \nCEO & Founder\, water stuff & sun \nHydrogen technologies and renewable hydrogen systems \n\n\n\n\n\nSyb ten Cate Hoedemaker \nManaging Director\, Maritime Battery Forum \nMarine battery technologies\, electrification and industry deployment \n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Haugen \nManaging Director\, Hexagon Purus Maritime \nHydrogen storage and maritime applications \n\n\n\n\n\nEdward Carney \nGlobal Head of Sales\, AYK Energy \nMarine batteries and swappable containerised battery systems \n\n\n\n\n\nMartin Kalecky \nProduct Manager for Marine Systems\, Chart Industries \nLiquid hydrogen storage\, handling and cryogenic systems \n\n\n\n\n\nMike Robinson \nCEO\, 426 Maritime \nMaritime technology and vessel integration \n\n\n\n\n\nAntoon Van Coillie \nCEO\, ZULU Associates \nZero-emission autonomous vessels and inland and short-sea shipping \n\n\n\n\nTogether\, the experts will examine what is already deployable\, where the common technical and operational barriers remain\, and what needs to happen next to make swappable zero-emission energy systems practical at scale. \n\nBuilding the Mediterranean Zero Emission Ecosystem\nShipZERO31 starts from a simple proposition: \nThe technology already exists to deliver absolute zero-emission shipping. The challenge now is bringing the pieces together. \nThe online workshop series will examine those pieces individually before bringing the findings together through ShipZERO31 and the Mediterranean Zero Emission Ecosystem.
