Air Products reports progress on new liquid hydrogen liquefier in Rotterdam

Apr 28, 2026

Air Products has announced a new construction milestone for its liquid hydrogen facility in the Port of Rotterdam, with the project now more than 65% complete. The company said the development marks a further step in strengthening and modernising its hydrogen footprint in the Netherlands, while supporting supply reliability for customers across a range of established and emerging sectors.

When it enters operation in 2027, the new liquefier is expected to be the largest liquid hydrogen production facility in Europe. Air Products said the plant will significantly expand the availability of liquid hydrogen in the region and will connect into its existing hydrogen distribution infrastructure in Rotterdam, reinforcing the company’s long-standing position within the wider industrial cluster.

Built around customer demand

According to Air Products, demand for liquid hydrogen comes from both existing and emerging industries, including electronics manufacturing, space applications, industrial processing, and emerging energy sectors. These markets depend on reliable supply, established logistics and supporting infrastructure in order to operate competitively and respond to changing regulatory requirements.

The new Rotterdam liquefier will be supplied through Air Products’ integrated hydrogen network in the region, drawing on production from the company’s multiple hydrogen sources in the local industrial cluster. The company said this will allow it to meet both current and future demand more effectively.

Because liquid hydrogen can be transported efficiently over longer distances, Air Products expects the new facility to provide additional supply options for customers across the Benelux region, France, Germany and the UK.

Miquel Lope, Vice President Northern Continent at Air Products, said the project reflects continued investment in strengthening supply reliability in the region. He said customers depend on hydrogen availability every day and that the Rotterdam liquefier is intended to provide a modern and resilient supply platform as demand grows.

Supporting Rotterdam’s hydrogen role

Air Products said the project also strengthens Rotterdam’s position as one of Europe’s main hydrogen and energy hubs, supported by policy backing, established infrastructure, logistics networks and industrial demand.

Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said the investment adds to the infrastructure needed to support industrial decarbonisation and improve the availability of hydrogen supply for businesses across the region.

Long-term presence in Rotterdam

Air Products has been active in the Port of Rotterdam for more than 55 years and describes itself as a global leader in hydrogen production, logistics and infrastructure with more than 65 years of experience in the sector. The company said the new liquefier reflects its approach of investing where customer demand is both tangible and growing, while strengthening existing operations and supporting future development.
