Dhamma Blue, the first hydrogen-powered recreational boat fully designed and built in Spain, represents a concrete step toward the decarbonisation of recreational boating and the development of a hydrogen ecosystem for maritime mobility.

The company’s hybrid propulsion system combines electric propulsion with a hydrogen fuel cell, allowing the vessel to navigate approximately 65 nautical miles at 12 knots while overcoming the range limitations typically associated with battery-only electric boats. Top speed reaches up to 28 knots.

The project demonstrates that hydrogen propulsion is no longer experimental but operational, with real navigation experience in international events and technology demonstrations.

Demonstrating operational performance

Dhamma Blue established an Endurance Record at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge 2025, confirming the operational viability and performance potential of hydrogen propulsion systems under real navigation conditions. The project also received the Jury’s Coup de Cœur Award, recognising its innovative contribution to sustainable boating.

From hydrogen vessels to hydrogen infrastructure

Dhamma Blue’s strategy extends beyond vessel development. The company is actively working with marinas and ports to support the deployment of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure as a necessary step to enable the transition toward zero-emission boating.

This approach reflects a clear industry reality: hydrogen adoption requires parallel development of both vessels and refuelling capabilities. Marinas therefore have the opportunity to evolve from traditional berthing facilities into clean mobility hubs supporting maritime decarbonisation.

Supporting regulatory development for hydrogen boating

Dhamma Blue is also contributing its operational experience to regulatory discussions shaping the future of hydrogen propulsion.

The company is involved in discussions related to the upcoming Spanish regulatory framework that will define the administrative, technical and economic conditions for hydrogen installation and refuelling operations in ports.

Expanding hydrogen vessel applications

Following the successful deployment of its first recreational hydrogen vessel, Dhamma Blue is now working on new applications including professional vessels, workboats and passenger transport solutions, where emissions reduction and energy efficiency are particularly critical.

The company’s long-term objective includes the development of a Spanish shipyard capable of producing a range of hydrogen-powered vessels, contributing to industrial development, employment and the energy transition of the maritime sector.

Contributing to the zero-emission maritime ecosystem

Through its work across vessels, infrastructure and regulatory collaboration, Dhamma Blue is positioning itself not only as a boat manufacturer but as an active contributor to the emerging hydrogen maritime ecosystem.

The project illustrates how hydrogen can enable silent, emission-free navigation while supporting the broader transition toward sustainable maritime mobility.
