Hyvolution 26 – Paris – Hydrogen and shipping: viability matters
On 27 January, ZESTAs Secretary-General Madadh MacLaine will join the Hyvolution Paris 2026 mainstage round table:
“H2 for Shipping: the Rise of e-Methanol, Ammonia, and LH2”
Madadh MacLaine brings insights on the viability of liquid hydrogen as a maritime fuel in the context of Absolute Zero Emissions shipping — a distinct position within a discussion spanning multiple fuel pathways.
The panel brings together perspectives from across shipbuilding, energy systems, and policy:
Madadh MacLaine – Secretary-General, Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs)
Paolo Guglia – Innovation and Policy Manager, FINCANTIERI S.p.A.
Thomas Bjørdal – CEO, @RENERGY – Renewable Energy Cluster
Taku Hasegawa – Senior Manager, Kawasaki Gas Turbine Europe
Felicia Mester – Managing Director Europe & IMO, Methanol Institute
Sébastien Zimmer – Partner, Energy, Utilities & Environment BU, Sia Partners
This session addresses a central question for shipping: what separates pilot projects from operational deployment.
Fuel choice alone does not resolve this. Deployment depends on aligned vessel design, bunkering infrastructure, safety frameworks, crew training, and regulation.
Secretary-General Madadh MacLaine will give updates on the IMO’s progress on hydrogen fuel guidelines, hydrogen fuel cell guidelines, and hydrogen crew training, as well as the latest news on liquid hydrogen bunkering and vessels.
Shipping deploys systems, not fuels in isolation.
ZESTAs brings those systems into focus, clarifying what enables Absolute Zero emissions shipping in practice.
