The second fully zero-emissions hydrogen powered ship (FPS Waal) will be operational with retrofitted hydrogen fuel cells early 2024. Future Proof Shipping (FPS) and Holland Shipyards Group are over halfway through the conversion to zero emissions.
The main engine and generators have been removed, the new fuel cell section and battery room inside the cargo hold have been installed, and the new 1 MW electric motor has been connected. The 1.2 MW fuel cell system supplied by Ballard Power Systems will provide main propulsion on the 200 TEU, 110m inland container vessel.
The project was made possible with funding support from Interreg North Sea Region Programme (Zero Emission Ports North Sea – ZEM Ports NS), Flagships H2020 Project (Clean Hydrogen Partnership), and Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
