Ben Medland
Founder and CEO of DRIFT Energy Ltd
Ben is inventing a new class of renewable energy. His company, DRIFT, is on a mission to harvest green hydrogen at sea and transport it globally. Focussed on making a meaningful impact on the energy transition, DRIFT’s patent pending designs combine energy generation, storage and distribution in a 3-in-1 solution to unlock the power of the deep ocean. Ben has a Masters in System Engineering and 18 years of professional experience working with the c-suite of the worlds largest energy, utilities and engineering firms. His company made it into the top 6% of the TechX program within the first 6 months of incorporation.
Ben will be sharing the narrative behind his latest endeavour DRIFT, which is focussed on creating a net new class of renewable energy. One that can scale over 72% of the globe and make a meaningful contribution to the energy transition. Hear Ben explain why this is a leapfrog technology, one that has many distinct advantages over current renewable technology. But perhaps the most important message it hearing Ben’s ambition to position DRIFT as a growth platform for the zero-emissions and future martime industry.
About Drift Energy
DRIFT combines energy generation, storage and distribution into high-performance sailing vessels.
Vessels are routed around Hydroloops to harvest the energy of the ocean. Ready to deliver payloads of Green Hydrogen straight to ports
DRIFT uses proprietary routing software to maintain flotillas in optimum weather conditions. Artificial Intelligence married to traditional weather forecasting enables the fleet to find optimum routing over week long trips.
Brian Boserup
CEO & Founder. Blue Technology
Brian Boserup has a commercial background within shipping, steel and the automotive industry, and is the founder of several companies. Since 2008 he has been pushing to develop and mature a new platform for shipping, that will allow commercial ships to operate with zero emissions.
The peak competency is a holistic mindset, entrepreneurship, out of the box thinking, good understanding and respect of the ocean elements such as wind and waves. The key drivers consist of a passion for the ocean and the deep worries for the impact of the climate crises.
Combining wind propulsion, power generation and green hydrogen to achieve true zero emissions on 5000 TEU vessel “Ocean Eagle”
Brian will give a short introduction to the key elements of Blue Technology project Ocean Eagle, and dig deeper into the options for the onboard:
Energy harvesting – An onboard water turbine is activated in favourable wind conditions to generate electricity which is powering the electrolyzer.
Energy storage – The hydrogen is liquified and stored onboard.
Hydrogen utilisation – In poor wind conditions or if special manoeuvres is required, fuel cells will convert the hydrogen back into electricity powering our two electric powertrains. Our design allows shipping to divorce itself from the internal combustion engine technology, and combined with other sustainable technologies we believe we can keep a boat speed close to 16 knots on average. Ocean Eagle is a great enabler for other sustainable technologies.
About Blue Technology
Blue Technology was founded in 2008, as a think tank by Brian Boserup with the ambitious goals to decarbonize the maritime industry and eliminate its need for ballast water. Since then we received funding from The Danish Maritime Found for our proof of concept study, and new AB members have joined.
By the end of 2021 we completed a proof of concept study with positive results and by August this year we will start a 3 year Joint Industry Project, propelling us from a TRL3 to a TRL6, delivering a 24 meter demonstrator and a tender level design of the full scale. The 240 meter full scale container carrier (5000 teu) can be in service by 2028.

TrAM – Electrical vessels and modular production
The TrAM-project’s main objective is to develop and validate a concept for waterborne modular design and construction with a focus on electrical-powered vessel operations in protected waters, coastal areas and inland waterways. The project is now being finalized and has resulted in a new fully-electric high-speed vessel with zero emissions that will operate between Stavanger and Hommersåk on the west coast of Norway. In addition, new manufacturing methods will contribute to 25 percent lower production costs and 70 percent lower engineering costs. The vessel is being built by the Norwegian shipyard Fjellstrand.

About Solomon Islands
Solomon Islands consists of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania, and had a population of approximately 669,800 in 2019. The country’s expansive area covers a unique range of atolls, mountains, and salt-water lagoons, and has some of the world’s richest marine diversity. The country is one of the most vulnerable to climate change, due in large part to the fact that the majority of the population lives within 1.5 km of the coastline and the islands are regularly exposed to extreme rainfall events.

Having a seagoing father and grandfather, venturing on to the sea and into the maritime world was a natural decision I always have and still do fully enjoy! After doing my nautical training as Maritime Officer (dual education for Deck Officer and Marine Engineer) in the early 90’s, I went sailing on the high and coastal seas on various Heavylift, Multipurpose, RoRo, Passenger and dry cargo vessels.
After obtaining my Master all Ships license I sailed for a few more years ending as a Captain. Having obtained my masters degree in Maritime Science (Maritime Economics and Maritime Law) from the Universities of Ghent and Antwerp in Belgium, I started working as a ship sale & purchase broker in 2003, specialized in secondhand sales as well as newbuildings in shortsea, multipurpose and heavylift vessels . Since then I have the pleasure to work with nice clients and colleagues on all aspects of the sale & purchase market for ships, an ever changing world I could not dream to live without!
