FIFI4MARINE has become the first battery fire-suppression system to receive RINA Type Approval, marking an important milestone for fire protection as lithium-ion battery installations continue to expand across the maritime industry.

The RINA Type Approval certificate was formally presented to FIFI4MARINE founder Cor Meedendorp and his team at SMM Hamburg 2026.

RINA recognises FIFI4MARINE as an “innovative fire-fighting solution developed to support enhanced fire protection for marine battery installations.”

The Type Approval evaluates the approved product design for repeat application, reducing the need to begin the same design-assessment process from the start for each new project. Vessel-specific integration, class and statutory requirements must still be addressed where applicable.

FIFI4MARINE develops autonomous fire detection and suppression systems specifically designed for battery installations of any chemistry. The system is designed to detect thermal runaway at source and prevent it from propagating to surrounding cells or battery modules.

In addition to maritime applications, the FIFI4MARINE system has been demonstrated in the data centre, parking and horticulture sectors, with both standard and customised configurations available.

Cor Meedendorp, founder of FIFI4MARINE, said:

“Being the first battery fire-suppression system to receive RINA Type Approval is a major milestone for FIFI4MARINE and for the work our team has put into this technology. Battery fire safety cannot be treated as an afterthought as electrification grows.

“Our focus has always been to detect early, and limit escalation before a single event becomes a much larger problem. This approval is an important validation of that approach and a major step in making the solution quicker to implement across the global maritime market.”
