ShipZERO31 Web-workshop-1: Swappable Energy Storage Systems Web-workshop

9 September 2026  |  ONLINE  |  10:00–12:00 BST

Workshop 1

Can swappable energy systems allow zero-emission vessels to operate before permanent port infrastructure is in place?

Across much of the Mediterranean, the renewable-energy and hydrogen infrastructure needed for zero-emission shipping does not yet exist at the quayside.

But that does not necessarily mean vessels need to wait.

The first ShipZERO31 online workshop will examine how containerised battery and hydrogen energy systems could provide a practical bridge to zero-emission operation, allowing energy to be produced or stored away from the port, transported using existing logistics networks and transferred directly onto vessels.

For some applications, the port infrastructure required to get started could be little more than the ability to handle a standard container.

Rather than asking what might be possible in the future, this workshop will look at what technologies already exist, what is beginning to be deployed, and what is still preventing wider adoption.

What will the workshop explore?

  • Swappable battery, gaseous-hydrogen and liquid-hydrogen systems
  • Which vessel types and operating profiles are best suited to them
  • Filling, charging, transport, port handling, connection and onboard integration
  • How existing infrastructure can be used rather than waiting for dedicated bunkering or charging facilities
  • Certification, safety and regulatory requirements
  • Interoperability, connectors and the need for common standards
  • How systems from different technology providers could work within a common framework
  • The practical and commercial barriers preventing wider deployment

From presentations to problem-solving

This is a two-hour working session.

The first hour will bring together expert perspectives from across the swappable-energy ecosystem.

The second will move into an expert roundtable focused on one central question:

What are the common challenges, what is already working, and which questions must we answer to make swappable zero-emission energy systems deployable at scale?

The objective is not to solve every challenge in two hours. It is to establish a shared understanding of the technology, identify the barriers that can be addressed collectively, and provide a strong foundation for the next stage of ShipZERO31.

Together, the experts will examine what is already deployable, where the common technical and operational barriers remain, and what needs to happen next to make swappable zero-emission energy systems practical at scale.

Building the Mediterranean Zero Emission Ecosystem

ShipZERO31 starts from a simple proposition:

The technology already exists to deliver absolute zero-emission shipping. The challenge now is bringing the pieces together.

The online workshop series will examine those pieces individually before bringing the findings together through ShipZERO31 and the Mediterranean Zero Emission Ecosystem.
