How to Achieve Absolute Zero Emissions in Trans-Oceanic Shipping
A ZESTAs Event at London International Shipping Week
16 September 2025 | IMO, London
Absolute Zero Shipping – Proven. Deployed. Scalable.
On 16 September 2025, ShipZERO30 – HyWindships took place at IMO Headquarters during London International Shipping Week.
The outcome was clear: Absolute Zero is not a future target — it is happening now.
-
- Wind-assisted tankers are already cutting daily fuel use by tonnes.
- Hydrogen ferries are out-performing diesel fleets with 98% uptime.
- Green hydrogen supply chains are in place, moving fuel from source to ship.
Shipowners, technology providers, investors, and policymakers left with one message: the solutions exist, they are deployed, and they are commercially viable today.
“Wind and Wave to Wake.”
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez opened the workshop, reminding delegates of the IMO’s responsibility “to reduce emissions and achieve our goals in order to protect the planet for future generations,” calling on innovators “to continue to be the early movers” and underlining that “this transition can only succeed if it is safe.”

Watch the Sessions
LH2 Production for Maritime Off-take
Lars Grimsmo (Gen2 Energy) explains how large-scale liquid hydrogen production and off-take can supply shipping with the volumes needed for Absolute Zero. From gigawatt-scale projects in Norway to EU Hydrogen Bank support, he outlines the infrastructure, partnerships, and demand required to close the loop.
LH2 Ships- Liquid Hydrogen in Vessels Today
At ShipZERO30, Kim Nguyen shared first-hand experience from the world’s first liquid hydrogen-powered ferry, MF Hydra. With 98% uptime in 2024 and over 80 successful bunkering operations, Hydra has proven that liquid hydrogen shipping is not only safe but reliable and ready to scale.
Kim highlighted how this pioneering project is now being scaled into larger vessels, showing how Absolute Zero Emissions can move from pilot projects to mainstream shipping.
Introduction to HyWindships Conceptual Designs
At ShipZERO30, Konstantinos Fakiolas demonstrated how combining hydrogen integration, wind propulsion, and optimised ship design makes Absolute Zero Emission vessels possible today.
With experience from more than 100 wind projects, Konstantinos shared insights on scaling wind-assisted chemical tankers, balancing technical integration with cargo capacity, and building strong business cases that benefit from future compliance frameworks.
